My name is Stuart Hunter (he/il) and I am running for Anglophone Vice-Chair on Federal Council. I’ve devoted basically my entire adult life to this party because of how important I think it is that we have a strong federal Green Party, for the benefit of Canada and the world. The Green Party is the only party that is honest about the gravity of the problems we’re facing and willing to say what needs to be done, and I’m committed to doing what I can to support getting as many Green MPs elected as possible so they can bring that perspective into Parliament. I got my start in the party with the UVic Greens campus club during Jo-Ann Roberts’ 2015 campaign in Victoria, before joining my local BC Greens riding association in Saanich North and the Islands. From there, I got involved with the club executive, and in 2018, I was elected as YGC Co-Chair, becoming a member of Federal Council for the first time (I’ve served five of the last six years). Over the last nine years, I have volunteered for the Greens in seven federal/provincial elections (plus a couple by-elections). I’ve got experience working well with Greens from all parts of the organization spanning local, national, and international levels. In terms of what needs to be done to make this organization function, my strong suit is governance. I am well-versed in the party’s Constitution and Bylaws, Green Rules, and all the other documents Councillors have to contend with. By taking on these tasks and having the institutional knowledge that is necessary for the administration of our party, I can leave space for others better suited to organizing work to focus on the important task of getting Greens elected. In real life/outside of Green stuff, I live in Victoria BC on the land of the lək̓ʷəŋən (Lekwungen) people and I finished my Master’s in French at UVic earlier this year. I speak English and French, and I’ve been working on my Spanish recently (for international Green reasons). Also I like Star Trek and video games…</p><h3><strong>Experience and Skills</strong></h3><p>I’ve always thought it’s better for members of the Executive to have been on Council before (in non-Exec roles). And even though I am currently a Youth Representative and will remain a Young Green for another couple years, I am the longest-serving current member of FC after the leader. Having started my time as the longest-serving Youth Rep ever in 2018, I am the only person to have been on FC during both the 2019 and 2021 federal elections. I’ve got experience of good and bad times, things that did and didn’t work. Both are useful. The Executive’s main responsibilities are about ensuring that Federal Council works. As a member of FC and Chair of the Governance Committee, I’ve already spent years endeavouring to improve the functioning of FC. It’s been challenging, but I’ve been able to help out along the way. I was the main author of the current version of the FC Handbook and the only version of the Council Green Rules. In terms of my qualifications for the Vice-Chair role specifically, I have co-chaired the Young Greens Council longer than anyone else, and I have chaired or co-chaired a number of committees over the years (currently, the Governance Committee, the International Secretariat, the SGM Oversight Committee, and the Global Young Greens Oversight Committee). The amount/depth of Green experience I have is very rare, and the variety of experience I have is too. Je m’appelle Stuart Hunter (he/il) et je me présente au poste de Vice-président anglophone sur le Conseil fédéral. Je considère extrêmement important qu’on ait un Parti vert fédéral fort pour le bien du Canada et du monde, à tel point que j’ai consacré pratiquement toute ma vie adulte à ce parti. Le Parti vert est le seul parti qui soit honnête quant à la gravité des problèmes auxquels nous faisons face et qui ose dire ce qu’il faut faire. Je m’engage à faire tout ce que peux pour qu’on élise autant de député.e.s vert.e.s que possible afin d’apporter cette perspective au Parlement. J’ai fait mes débuts dans le Parti au sein du club des Verts d’UVic lors de la campagne de 2015 de Jo-Ann Roberts à Victoria avant de rejoindre mon association de circonscription locale provinciale dans Saanich North and the Islands. Par la suite, je me suis impliqué dans l’exécutif du club et en 2018 j’ai été élu coprésident des JVC, devenant par conséquent membre du Conseil fédéral pour la première fois (j’y ai siégé durant cinq des six dernières années). Au cours des neuf dernières années, j’ai été bénévole pour les Verts lors de sept élections fédérales et municipales (en plus de quelques élections partielles). En prenant ces tâches en main et en possédant les connaissances institutionnelles nécessaires à l’administration de notre parti, je peux laisser la place à d’autres personnes mieux adaptées au travail d’organisation pour qu’elles se concentrent sur l’importante tâche de faire élire des Vert.e.s. Dans la vie réelle/en dehors des affaires vertes, j’habite à Victoria en Colombie-Britannique sur les terres du peuple lək̓ʷəŋən (Lekwungen) et j’ai ma maîtrise en études françaises et francophones à UVic il y a quelques mois. J’aime aussi Star Trek et les jeux vidéo…</p><h3><strong>Expérience et compétences</strong></h3><p>J’ai toujours pensé qu’il était préférable que les membres du Conseil exécutif aient déjà siégé au Conseil (dans des rôles hors de l’exécutif). Même si je suis actuellement représentant jeunesse et que je resterai un Jeune vert encore quelques années, je suis le membre actuel du CF ayant le plus long mandat après la chef. Ayant commencé mon mandat en 2018, je suis la seule personne à avoir siégé au Conseil lors des élections fédérales de 2019 et de 2021. J’ai de l’expérience de bons et de mauvais moments, de choses qui ont marché et qui n’ont pas. Les deux sont utiles. Les principales responsabilités du Conseil exécutif consistent à veiller à ce que le Conseil fédéral fonctionne bien. En tant que membre du CF et président du comité de gouvernance, j’ai déjà passé des années à tenter d’améliorer le fonctionnement du Conseil. Cela a été un défi, mais j’ai pu faire mes contributions en cours de route. J’ai été le principal auteur de la version actuelle du Manuel du CF et de la seule version des règles de procédure du Conseil. En ce qui concerne mes qualifications pour le rôle de vice-président en particulier, j’ai co-présidé le Conseil des Jeunes Verts plus longtemps que personne, et j’ai présidé ou co-présidé plusieurs comités au fil des ans (actuellement, le Comité de gouvernance, le Secrétariat international du PVC, le Comité de l’AGE sur la co-chefferie et le Comité de surveillance des Jeunes verts mondiaux). La quantité et la profondeur de mon expérience chez les Verts sont très rares et la variété d’expérience que j’ai l’est aussi.
