Robin Dick

I became interested in the Green Party in 2017 after reading about the state of our planet, which upset me: it was urgent to act! But how? As a CEGEP teacher, I knew that environmental concern was widely shared among young people, but that this concern was very often limited to the desire to change one's personal lifestyle. The perception that the ecological crisis required a political response was not widespread.

Disappointed by the immobility and internal contradictions that seemed to characterize the traditional parties, it seemed logical to consider the Green Party, if only for the symbolic value of the name. Digging a little deeper, I was seduced by the Global Greens Charter, which exceeded my expectations and corresponded perfectly to my personal values.

So it was with great enthusiasm that I offered my services as a volunteer for the PVQ, which was preparing for the 2018 campaign. That's when I got my first taste of politics by running as a candidate in the Montreal suburbs. I quickly realized that politics isn't just a confrontation of ideas, it's a 'voting machine'. No matter how well you articulate your thoughts in debates, it's no use if you can't motivate, engage and inspire people-become credible enough in their eyes that they become willing to vote for you. These lessons were confirmed in 2019, when I helped Robert Green's campaign in my riding of Westmount NDG.

In the recent by-election, I volunteered on Jonathan Pedneault's campaign, where I met some great people from the CVP. One of my most memorable encounters was with Mike Morrice, with whom I spent a good hour banging on doors. What a lesson! All doors count; the important thing is to create sympathy, not conversion; to build meaningful relationships; to convince people that you're there for them. That's where the PVC as a whole has to go.
