The Green Party of Canada will promote convening a Citizen's Assembly to propose, in partnership and with leadership from Indigenous groups and other affected parties, a new system to replace the British monarch as Canada's head of state.

Canada's hereditary monarchy is an undemocratic relic of the medieval period and of British colonization. Canada is an independent country and deserves to have a head(s) of state who lives here, is a Canadian citizen, and has democratic legitimacy. In practice, our current head of state doesn’t even do the job. It is also highly problematic that the British monarch, who automatically becomes our head of state, is required to adhere to and serve as head of a specific religion. This proposal is designed to encompass various possibilities for replacement, details to be worked out by the Assembly.

BE IT RESOLVED that the Green Party of Canada supports convening a Citizen's Assembly to propose, in consultation with Indigenous groups and other stakeholders, a new system to replace the British monarch as Canada's head of state.

Le Parti vert du Canada appuie la convocation d'une assemblée citoyenne pour proposer, en consultation et en coopération avec les groupes autochtones et les autres parties concernées, un nouveau système pour remplacer le monarque britannique en tant que chef d'État du Canada.

La monarchie héréditaire du Canada est une relique non démocratique de la période médiévale et de la colonisation britannique. Le Canada est un pays indépendant et mérite d'avoir un chef d'État qui vit ici, qui est citoyen canadien et qui jouit d'une légitimité démocratique. Dans la pratique, notre chef d'État actuel ne fait même pas ce travail. Il est également très problématique que le monarque britannique, qui devient automatiquement notre chef d'État, soit tenu d'adhérer à une religion spécifique et d'en être le chef. Cette proposition est conçue pour englober diverses possibilités de remplacement, dont les détails seront élaborés par l'Assemblée.
