G21-P025 Withdraw From the Lima Group

Avatar: Official proposal Official proposal

Submitter Name

Alan Freeman

This proposal was discussed in the workshop during Phase 2 of the VGM. However, there was not enough time for this proposal to be voted on in plenary by the members during Phase 2. Therefore, this proposal will not be included in the ratification vote.

Proposal

The GPC advocates for the Canadian government to withdraw from the Lima Group and to cease all regime change activities, including sanctions and orchestrated geopolitical isolation, against Venezuela.

Objective

Canada is engaged in hybrid warfare regime change operations that are designed to rob Venezuelans of their choice of government, economy, health, dignity and way of life. The GPC will advocate that Canada cease its regime change activities and withdraw from initiatives that subvert peoples’ collective will. The Lima Group is an alliance of Canada’s Liberal government and right-wing governments in Latin America created in 2017 to deal with the “crisis” in Venezuela created by external forces in the service of the US and to supposedly “restore its democracy.” It is an instrument designed to undermine Venezuelans’ democracy.

Benefit

Canada’s withdrawal from the Lima Group will:

  • Reduce foreign induced suffering and death in Venezuela;

  • Allow for Venezuelans’ collective political/economic choices to stand and flourish;

  • Reduce threats to Venezuela’s well-being and sovereignty by ceasing to enable and sanitize US aggression;

  • Bring Canada back within the domain of UN policy.

Supporting Comments from Submitter

Researchers Jeffrey Sachs and Mark Weisbrot estimated that 40,000 Venezuelans have died as a result of the sanctions imposed by the US, Canada and the EU in 2018-2019 alone. Many thousands more have died since.
